Thermocouples feature simple structure and robust durability. Thermocouple sensors perform temperature measurement based on the Seebeck effect. Two dissimilar conductors are connected to form a closed loop. A tiny voltage differential will be generated in the loop as long as temperatures differ at the two junctions. This voltage difference is referred to as thermal voltage or thermoelectromotive force (thermo-emf). Its magnitude depends on the materials of the two conductors, as well as the temperature difference between the measuring junction (the joint of two conductors) and the cold junction (the open terminal of the conductors). For this reason, thermocouples are generally only used for differential temperature measurement. The absolute temperature at the measuring junction can be obtained if the cold junction temperature is known, or after separate temperature measurement and compensation.

Thermocouple temperature sensors feature an extremely wide measuring range, simple and rugged construction, and fast response speed. As self-powered sensors, they require no external power supply. Accordingly, they are widely adopted for high-temperature process monitoring in industrial sectors including metallurgy, chemical industry and power.
