Measuring principle:
The pH‑selective ISFET (Ion‑Sensitive Field‑Effect Transistor) gate insulator serves as the ion‑selective layer for H⁺ ions. The gate insulator permits bidirectional passage of H⁺ ions while blocking other ions (isolation effect). Depending on the acidity‑alkalinity of the measured medium, the insulator surface accepts or releases H⁺ ions (amphoteric behaviour). As a result, the insulator surface becomes positively charged (H⁺ uptake in acidic media) or negatively charged (H⁺ release in alkaline media). According to the pH value, the charge quantity on the insulator surface modulates the channel field‑effect between the source and drain. The control voltage between gate and source (U₍GS₎) is calculated based on the Nernst equation.
