During turbidity measurement, when a light beam directed into the process medium encounters opaque particles, such as suspended solids, the beam changes its original propagation direction. This phenomenon is known as light scattering. The incident light is scattered in multiple directions. Scattered light at two angles is particularly relevant to turbidity measurement: 90° scattered light is mainly used for measuring turbidity in drinking water, while 135° scattered light is used for measurements at higher particle concentrations. At low concentrations of suspended solids in the process medium, most of the light is scattered at 90°, while relatively little light is scattered at 135°. As the concentration of suspended solids increases, the ratio changes: the intensity of 135° scattered light increases, while the intensity of 90° scattered light decreases.
