The total chlorine concentration is measured based on the amperometric measurement principle. Total chlorine includes the following compounds: • Free chlorine: hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ions (OCl⁻) • Combined chlorine (chloramines) • Organically bound chlorine, such as cyanuric acid derivatives Chloride ions (Cl⁻) are not included. The sensor is a membrane-covered, dual-electrode sensor. The platinum electrode serves as the cathode and working electrode, while the silver halide-coated electrode serves as the anode and reference electrode. The membrane cap is filled with electrolyte, forming the measuring chamber. The electrodes are immersed in the measuring chamber, which is separated from the process medium by a hydrophilic membrane. Chlorine compounds in the process medium diffuse through the sensor membrane into the measuring chamber. A constant polarization voltage between the two electrodes triggers an electrochemical reaction of the chlorine compounds at the working electrode. The working electrode releases electrons while the reference electrode accepts them, generating an electrical current. Within the sensor’s specified measuring range, the current is proportional to the total chlorine concentration and is largely unaffected by pH. The transmitter calculates the concentration from the current signal and displays the measured value in mg/L (ppm).
