The measurement principle uses a long-life pulsed strobe light source. The light passes through the measuring cell and is split by a beam splitter into separate measurement and reference paths. Filters allow only the selected measurement or reference wavelengths to reach the respective detectors. The medium in the reaction cell absorbs light across the spectrum, while the target parameter absorbs additional light at specific wavelengths. The ratio of the measurement and reference signals minimizes the influence of turbidity and compensates for light-source aging. Total nitrogen (TN) is determined from the change in the signal ratio. The relationship between the ratio change and TN concentration is nonlinear.
