CA76NA uses a potentiometric ion-selective electrode (ISE) principle to measure sodium ion (Na⁺) concentration in water. A sodium-selective glass electrode measures the potential generated by Na⁺ ions according to the Nernst equation. The pH electrode serves both as the reference point for sodium measurement and for monitoring sample pH. For ultra-low sodium concentrations, the sample pH must be maintained above 10.8 to minimize interference from H⁺ ions. The analyzer maintains a target pH of 11.0 by dosing an alkalizing agent such as diisopropylamine.

CA76NA protects water-steam cycles and ion exchangers by continuously monitoring low sodium concentrations. An increase in sodium levels can indicate harmful impurities, condenser leaks, or ion exchanger failure, enabling early detection and preventive maintenance.
