Spectral measurement is based on the Lambert-Beer law. The light source emits a beam through the lens and into the sample contained in the measuring cell. The transmitted light is processed by the spectroscopic unit and converted into a measurable electrical signal. The sensor uses a dual-beam principle to compensate for changes in light intensity. Full-spectrum measurement analyzes the absorption spectrum of the medium, as each molecule has a characteristic absorption spectrum. When the incident light intensity I′ and transmitted light intensity I are known, absorbance is calculated as: A = -log₁₀(I/I′) = ε × c × d The main factors affecting absorbance are the sample concentration c, optical path length d, and absorption coefficient ε. The sensor uses an integrated analytical model to calculate the concentration of the measured parameter from the absorption spectrum. The model is established by correlating known concentrations with their corresponding spectra. A key challenge is cross-sensitivity: different substances may absorb light at the same wavelength. For example, increased turbidity can reduce the detected light intensity, causing interference when measuring chemical oxygen demand (COD).
