The membrane is the core component of an ion-selective electrode (ISE), enabling selective measurement of specific ions. It contains an ion carrier that allows target ions, such as ammonium or nitrate, to selectively migrate through the membrane and reach the electrode. The ion transfer generates an electrical potential that is proportional to the logarithm of the ion concentration. A reference electrode with a stable potential measures this potential, and the ion concentration is calculated according to the Nernst equation. Based on the potentiometric measurement principle, the measurement is unaffected by color and turbidity.
