The measurement principle of a pressure switch is primarily based on the deformation characteristics of an elastic sensing element. Pressure switch sensors are available with ceramic diaphragm or metal diaphragm designs. A ceramic diaphragm sensor is an oil-free sensor in which the process pressure acts directly on the robust ceramic diaphragm, causing it to deform. The resulting change in capacitance is generated by the deformation of the ceramic substrate electrode and diaphragm electrode under pressure. In a metal diaphragm sensor, the diaphragm deforms under process pressure, and the fill fluid transfers the pressure to the Wheatstone bridge, converting the deformation of the sensing element into an electrical signal. This deformation is then converted into an electrical signal based on capacitive or resistive strain-gauge principles. The signal is processed by signal-conditioning circuitry for amplification, linearization, temperature compensation, and other corrections, ultimately providing an industry-standard 4–20 mA analog output.
