Measuring principle:
The ultrasonic measurement principle is based on the time-of-flight (ToF) method, measuring the distance between the reference point and the medium surface. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses toward the material surface. The pulses are reflected from the material surface and received by the sensor, while the transmitter measures the time difference (t) between pulse transmission and reception. Based on the time difference (t) and sound velocity (c), the distance is calculated as D = c × t / 2. Based on the distance (D), the level (L), volume (V), and flow rate (Q) in weirs or open channels can also be calculated.

The Prosonic FMU41 is suitable for non-contact level measurement of liquids, slurries, and bulk solids, as well as flow measurement in open channels and weirs. Its integrated two-wire or four-wire transmitter is designed for level measurement in demanding applications such as storage tanks, agitators, silos, and conveyor belts. The on-site envelope curve display enables simple instrument fault diagnosis. The linearization function with up to 32 points allows measured values to be converted into length, volume, or flow rate in any desired unit.
