Ultrasonic measurement is based on the time-of-flight (ToF) principle, measuring the distance between the reference point and the medium surface. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses toward the material surface. The pulses are reflected from the material surface and received by the sensor, while the transmitter measures the time difference (t) between pulse transmission and reception. Based on the time difference (t) and sound velocity (c), the distance is calculated as D = c × t / 2. Based on the distance (D), the level (L), volume (V), and flow rate (Q) in weirs or open channels can also be calculated.

Prosonic FMU90 can be installed directly in the field or mounted on a DIN rail inside an instrument control cabinet. It is suitable for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids, slurries, sludge, powders, and bulk solids. It can also be used for flow measurement in open channels and weirs. A single sensor can simultaneously measure the level and flow rate of stormwater overflow basins. Up to six relays can be used to trigger trend alarms, flow pulse output alarms, or backwater/sludge alarms. Single-channel and dual-channel versions are available.
