Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) measure temperature relying on the characteristic that the resistance of metallic conductors changes with temperature. The core principle: as temperature varies, the amplitude of lattice vibration in metallic conductors such as platinum and copper changes, which creates different levels of impedance to electron movement and brings about corresponding resistance variation. Taking the Pt100 platinum RTD as an example, its nominal resistance is 100 Ω at 0 °C; resistance rises by approximately 0.385 Ω per 1 °C temperature increase, showing highly‑linear behaviour over a defined temperature range. For practical measurements, a constant‑current source or bridge circuit converts resistance variations into electrical signals. 3‑wire / 4‑wire connection eliminates lead‑wire errors, and resistance values are ultimately converted into temperature readings against international standard reference tables.
