Thermocouples feature a simple structure, high mechanical strength, and excellent durability. Temperature measurement is based on the Seebeck effect. Two different conductors are connected to form a closed circuit. When the temperatures at the two junctions are different, a small voltage difference is generated in the circuit. This voltage is known as the thermoelectric voltage or thermoelectromotive force (EMF). The magnitude of the thermoelectric voltage depends on the materials of the two conductors and the temperature difference between the measuring junction (the connection point of the two conductors) and the cold junction (the open end of the conductors). Therefore, thermocouples are typically used for temperature difference measurement. By knowing the cold junction temperature, or by measuring and compensating for it separately, the absolute temperature at the measuring junction can be accurately determined. Common thermocouple conductor combinations and their corresponding thermoelectric voltage/temperature characteristics are specified in IEC 60584 and ASTM E230/ANSI MC96.1 standards.
