The materials of the two conductors are related to the temperature difference between the "measurement point" (the junction of the two conductors) and the "cold end" (the open-circuit end of the conductor). Therefore, thermocouples are usually only used for temperature difference measurement. Given the cold end temperature, or after conducting separate temperature measurement and compensation, the absolute temperature at the measurement point can be obtained.
